How to Get a Cleaner SVG From Your Image

  • Start with the best source image available. Clear edges, adequate resolution, good contrast and well-separated colors give the tracer more useful visual information.
  • Avoid using more colors than the artwork actually needs. If a logo contains four meaningful colors, tracing dozens of subtle raster variations may only make the vector more complicated.
  • For simple artwork, try reducing the color count and increasing smoothing.
  • For detailed artwork, retain enough detail to preserve important forms without tracing every tiny pixel variation.
  • Remove unwanted backgrounds. If the artwork contains an unwanted solid background, remove or exclude it before downloading your final SVG.
Remember: Automatic vectorization is not identical to manually redrawing artwork. Extremely low-resolution images, complex photographs, gradients, tiny text and heavily compressed graphics may require additional editing after conversion.

Does converting an image to SVG make it a real vector?

An SVG file can technically contain raster content, so the .svg extension by itself does not guarantee that the artwork has been vectorized. Can I convert an image to SVG without losing quality?

Why are similar colors combined in my SVG?

Automatic vectorization has to decide which pixels belong to the same color region. If two shades are very similar, they may be treated as one region depending on the tracing settings. Increase the color count when preserving that separation is important.

Can I keep the image background transparent?

Yes, use the transparent-background option when you do not want the background turned into part of the vector artwork. This is particularly useful for logos, stickers and cutting-machine designs.

Can I edit the SVG after converting it?

A path-based SVG can be opened in compatible vector-editing software, where its vector elements can be adjusted. Can I convert a photo to SVG?

Why does text look bad after image-to-SVG conversion?
